The View from the South

Battery Park

Statue of Liberty
A reminder that the U.S. is a nation of immigrants and a symbol of the American Dream. The statue was originally intended for Alexandria in Egypt. It took 10 years to complete. The statue was a gift from the French people, in honor of the American Revolutionary War.

Governor's Island
Named after the governors appointed by five English monarchs whose tenures were ended by the Revolutionary War. A cannon pointing toward Wall Street still remains on the island with the royal insignia upon it.

Ellis Island
Chosen by the Federal Government as an "immigration station" site in 1890, over 12 million immigrants passed through before the island was decommissioned in 1954.
